Although the animals that live in the Arctic can live quite comfortably, you or I wouldn’t last long in such cold temperatures.

In parts of the Arctic known as the Tundra, the sun shines only from March to September, and it’s dark the rest of the year. In the summer it is always daytime, and in the winter it’s always night.

Other animals that live here include the Arctic Fox, Arctic Hare, Arctic Wolf, Killer Whale, Musk Ox, Reindeer, Snowy Owl and Walrus.

The Arctic has long cold winters and cool short summers. There is always snow and ice on the ground, and it can be very windy.

An amazing display of glowing lights in the night sky, known as the Aurora Borealis, can sometimes be seen over the Arctic .

Fewer people live in the Arctic than in just about any other part of the world.

Some of the people who live in the Arctic are called Eskimo or Inuit.

Although some people imagine that Eskimos live in igloos (domed houses made of ice) they usually only build these as a temporary shelter whilst out hunting.
